Threshold Labs began as a working environment — a place designed for sustained attention, long-horizon research, and problems that did not submit to quick answers.
The Early Years
The early years were modest and deliberate. The work ranged across applied research, systems design, and interdisciplinary problem solving. What unified the work was a shared standard: clarity mattered more than speed, and durability mattered more than novelty.
A Move West
In the late 1990s, Threshold Labs relocated to Santa Monica, California. The new lab was modern for its time, purpose-built, and unpretentious. The work continued much as it always had — focused, collaborative, and largely invisible to the outside world.
The Long Continuity
Today the laboratory is run by the founders’ daughters — Mina, Aurora, and Luna McLeod-Foster — and the work continues under the original standard. Visitors sometimes ask what Threshold Labs actually studies. The honest answer has not changed in decades: continuity. How work survives interruption. How a standard outlives its authors. How what is loved is kept — not by holding it still, but by letting it return.
Nothing built here was built to be permanent. It was built to recur. The lab keeps its records accordingly: everything worth keeping is written down, and everything written down is revisited. Memory, in this building, is not storage. It is a practice.
